Growing up in the 2000’s, there was a certain vibe to the early internet. It often felt like a larger, lonelier place, like it was you and your singular island of fellow weirdos on Livejournal, in a Neopets guild. But it was also incredible when you did find those little islands. It made for a comradery that modern social media can’t replicate. It was genuine and spontaneous and ephemeral. It made the interactions with your communities, and the way you engaged with shared interests, meaningful.
These virtual galleries by Karim have been to me what these early internet forums were: holdouts in a hostile online landscape for good people with genuine passion for something. Everyone comes as they are, with different skill levels, with different inroads.
These events have helped me start conversations with artists and paleontology enthusiasts. They form beautiful snapshots of our community (and the artists within), in an age when AI increasingly populates other platforms. They allow amazing artists from across the world a chance at exhibiting in a gallery, something that may not be available to them in their offline communities. It’s such a delight to see this gallery collection spanning the breadth of poetry, illustration, 3D modelling, invertebrates, and dinosaurs in every hue. It’s been so long since I stopped and really admired paleoart in this way.
Thank you, Karim, and to all the artists who contributed, for creating this incredible tribute to the artists in our community!
